Rev. H. K. Matthews Honored in Pensacola

Rev. H. K. Matthews, author of Victory After the Fall: Memories of a Civil Rights Activist, was recognized last month during the H. K. Matthews Commemorative Event–A Salute to Black History Month at Pensacola Junior College. Matthews “was honored for a lifetime of work Monday evening before an audience of some of Pensacola’s most prominent citizens,” writes the University of West Florida newspaper, The Voyager. Hosts of civic leaders, including Governor Charlie Crist, civil rights activist Dick Gregory, and former congressman Joe Scarborough, each took a turn at the podium to offer praise, thanks, and to tell stories about Matthews many contributions to the area …

NewSouth Author Writes Letter to the Editor in Support of the Mowa Band of Choctaw Indians

Jacqueline Matte, author of They Say the Wind is Red, had a Letter to the Editor posted in the Birmingham News on October 25, 2006. Matte writes that she is pleased with the paper’s article about Calcedeaver Elementary School as “Gov. Bob Riley’s poster child for Alabama’s Reading Initiative program”; however, she says that the children who attend the school, mostly “poor Native Americans,” should be recognized as part of the Mowa Band of Choctaw Indians, a tribe still seeking to be recognized by the federal government …

Charlotte Observer Spotlights Grievances at Novello Festival

The Charlotte Observer featured Grievances author Mark Ethridge’s October 25 appearance at the Novello Festival of Reading in a Local Page article. As the Observer notes, Ethridge explained to the audience at the festival that Grievances is based on a true story of racial injustice from the 1970s. The article notes that, though the novel is a work of fiction, it is “full of details [Ethridge] absorbed as a third-generation reporter.” …
